New State Requirement for Commercial Properties Currently Using a Single Check Backflow Device
Effective Date and Requirement: Starting July 1, 2024, new regulations from the State Water Resources Control Board Cross Connection Control Policy Handbook will come into effect. Under Sub-Section 3.2.2, all single check backflow devices must be replaced with no less than a double check backflow device. This update is crucial for maintaining the safety and quality of the water supply, helping to prevent any potential contamination from backflow.
New Ordinance from San Juan Water District: The District has updated Ordinances 10000.03.5 to align with this policy and now requires that all property owners comply no later than July 1, 2029. This means if your property currently has a single check backflow device, you are required to replace it with a double check device (or higher) by the compliance deadline.
Action Steps: To meet this requirement, it is recommended that you consult with a certified plumber or a backflow prevention specialist. These professionals can ensure that the upgrade is completed properly. Guidance, installation details and specifications are available on the District’s website: San Juan Water District Engineering Standard Details.
Inspection and Verification: Once your new backflow prevention device is installed, you will need to contact the San Juan Water District to schedule an inspection. This inspection will confirm that the new device meets the required standards and is correctly installed to safeguard the integrity of the water distribution system.
If you have additional questions or would like to schedule an inspection, you can reach Customer Service between 8:30am and 5:00pm at (916) 791-0115.
