Ensuring a Safe, Reliable Water Supply...Now and in the Future
San Juan Water District obtains
100 percent of its water supply from Folsom Lake.
Water. It’s one of our most precious resources. We use it daily – whether for nourishment, fire protection, gardening, washing or recreation. Yet, too often, we take water for granted. After all, it always flows through the tap when we need it.
However, while water appears abundant, projections show that California’s water supply is at risk and faces many challenges. That’s why we consistently develop innovative programs and participate in water management planning to protect your water supply.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared 2008 a drought year due to below-normal snowfall and California experiencing the driest spring on record. Our primary water source – Folsom Lake – has fallen to below normal levels, reducing our water supply.
We have developed a water shortage contingency plan to meet our customers’ water demands during dry conditions. And, through regional leadership, we’ve formed innovative solutions that also ensure our long-term water supplies.
Due to the drought, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has cut water supplies to local water providers. As a result, we issued a Stage 2 Water Alert in May 2008 asking customers to voluntarily reduce their water use by five to ten percent.
We provide free programs and services to help our customers use water efficiently.
With increasing population, our water distribution system and supplies will face greater demands.
Look for our improvement project signs in workzones. We’re updating and replacing several of our out-of-date facilities to meet current and future water supply demands.
We must adhere to dozens of federal and state laws, which address everything from water quality to water delivery to environmental protection.
Our Consumer Confidence Report shows how we meet all federal and state requirements for providing a safe, reliable water supply, while also preserving the environment.
With water shortages statewide, water industry representatives are working together to find solutions for delivering water to communities in desperate need of back-up supplies.
While we support multi-regional water management programs, our primary objective is to ensure our customers’ water supply. We advocate for our customers in regional and statewide water resource planning efforts.
In 2008, Governor Schwarzenegger introduced the 20x2020 plan to address problems in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. The plan outlines actions to "achieve a 20 percent reduction in per capita water use statewide by 2020."
While we actively support water efficiency measures, we have requested further clarification about the plan's goals and measurement tools. San Juan Water District staff are actively involved in the plan's development process to serve as customer advocates.
